Artificial intelligences that utilize machine learning are better at predicting heart attacks than cardiologists.

Four AIs predicted 7.6% more heart attacks than doctors in the United Kingdom, research by epidemiologist Stephen Weng of the University of Nottingham indicates. All four AIS were more effective at predicting heart attacks than guidelines set by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association (ACA/AHA), Science reported.

The AI examined British medical records from 2005 and 2015 for 295,267 patients. The AI were more accurate because they were able to examine far more data than the criteria set by the ACA/AHA guidelines. This included an additional 22 factors that human doctors usually ignore.

The AIs were even able to identify some new risk factors heart attacks including mental illness, Science reported. This was possible because the AIs employed machine learning to educate themselves with the data.

Will your Next Doctor be an AI?

The implications for the future of medicine here are staggering. A strong possibility is that the clinic of the future will employ physicians’ assistants or nurse practitioners and no doctors. Instead the diagnosis will be done by AIs which will also prescribe treatment.

That will make it possible to get higher quality medicine and diagnosis to more people. An example would be AI powered clinics in Walmart, CVS or Kroger stores that would be able to offer expert diagnosis of the kind now found at University medical centers.

This might help alleviate the physician shortage in the United States, but it might be bad news for American doctors who make around $202,000 a year. AI might be able to do their job faster and cheaper. Like professional poker players; and hedge fund managers, cardiologists might soon face unemployment because of AI.

Will AI be Bigoted?

It is possible for artificial intelligence to become prejudiced by studying human behavior or language.

New research indicates that AIs using machine learning picked up human biases, Live Science reported. This can include racism, homophobia and xenophobia.

Not surprisingly the main way AIs learn bigotry is through language. Interestingly enough AIs can also detect patterns of prejudice and bigoted behavior. One found that people were more likely to associate weapons with African Americans.

That means a major goal of future AI research will be teaching machines not to be prejudiced. Hopefully we will be more successful at that than we have been teaching humans not to be prejudiced.
