The city of Baltimore has an unlikely new superhero that is attracting a large following online. Mr. Trash Wheel is a water wheel; that scoops garbage and other debris out of the Jones Falls River in an attempt to keep the harbor clean.

Mr. Trash Wheel now has 10,000 Twitter followers and it has attracted attention from the NBC TV network. One reason why the machine is so popular is that is very ecofriendly.

No power or fossil fuels are needed because Mr. Trash Wheel is powered by the current of the Jones Falls River. When the river is low, it switches to solar panels which can generate up 2,500 watts of electricity every day. That’s enough to power a typical home.

A Million Pounds of Trash Collected

Since he started work on May 9, 2014, Mr. Trash Wheel has scooped up over one million pounds (453,592 kilos) of garbage that is incinerated to produce electricity. The rubbish removed from the harbor includes 367,930 plastic bottles, 459,247 Styrofoam cups, 8.9 million cigarette butts, 251,217 plastic grocery bags and 338,079 chip bags.

Fans of the classic TV show The Wire; which was set in Baltimore will wonder if Mr. Trash Wheel has churned up any dead bodies. One classic episode that drama involved bodies floating in the harbor. There’s no word on that or any of the other interesting items it might have collected over the years. These probably include hypodermic needles and lost change.

Mr. Trash Wheel sits at the point where the Jones Falls River empties into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Before Mr. Trash Wheel went to work, the River was a sort of conveyor belt carrying trash from city streets into the Inner Harbor.

Now the trash gets burned and the water stays clean. One has to hope Mr. Trash Wheel gets copied and put to work in more cities. His services are desperately needed in many urban areas.
